  • Resumen
    • In the US, 4.1 SG barite is used for land based drilling projects, though 4.2 is still used for offshore projects. However, [Paloma Ruiz] added that there have been reports of 4.0 SG barite being used in some areas.

"Perhaps sometime in the future the industry may go to 4.0 again, driven by depleting reserves of 4.1 grade barite," Ruiz said. "Of course, exploration drilling projects by barite companies will also add 4.1 grade barite to the global reserves as these are depleted." Until 2010, the API specification called for a minimum of 4.2 SG for barite used in drilling mud. However, the API was approached by Schlumberger subsidiary, M-I SWACO, which asked the organisation to consider barite with an SG of 4.1 as an alternative, rather than a replacement, drilling material.
