Resumen de Two ideas of democracy
In this article I investigate the language-picture we have inherited from Isaiah Berlin and his followers regarding the link (often held to be intrinsic) between Berlinean positive freedom and participatory, Athenian-style, democracy. I not only suggest that the Athenians had a negative conception of freedom but argue, further, that this has obscured an interesting link between positive liberty arguments and non-participatory forms of rule, including, significantly, representative government. I argue that this means that we need to radically rethink our ideas about the relationship between participatory and representative government and positive and negative liberty.
