The article presents the sociolinguistic situation of the Arabic-speaking population from Elx and Crevillent, Baix Vinalopó (Valencian Country), in the 15th century. At that time the region was ruled by the city of Barcelona (1391-1460), particularly in 1457. The sociolinguistic situation is approached from the study of the capbreus (books of revenues) of Elx and Crevillent, and a muslim trial held in Elx. The contact of languages, Arabic and Catalan, and the bilinguism of the Arabic-speaking community are analysed. Some aspects of the dialectal variation of the Valencian-Arabic vernacular are also mentioned.
