  • Resumen
    • By third grade, students should understand "a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts." However, without the necessary prerequisite knowledge gained in first and second grade, students often look at shapes that are unequally partitioned and count the number of pieces to find the denominator, without ever taking into consideration the size of the pieces. Here, Epling presents a problem that would give students the opportunity to use an equal-sharing problem to discover different ways to partition a square. It also allows them to compare noncongruent pieces of a whole to determine if those pieces are equal.
