Ivermectin enema treatment in a patient with strongyloides hyperinfection. A case report

  • Introduction: Strongyloides hyperinfection is a severe syndrome with a high mortality rate, which has several predisposing conditions and risk factors. This syndrome frequently affects the gastrointestinal tract, preventing the administration of oral medications. This situation represents a major problem because treatment options are limited to oral formulations and there are few data on alternative therapies. We report a case of Strongyloides hyperinfection developed after corticotherapy administration who was treated with rectal ivermectin obtaining satisfactory results. The ivermectin enema was elaborated by the Pharmacy Service because it does not exist a commercial presentation appropriate for rectal administration. Conclusion: Few data are available about rectal administration of ivermectin. In our experience, ivermectin enema is easy to formulate and it was well tolerated by the patient. Consequently, we believe it can constitute an alternative for patients with Strongyloydes hyperinfection who cannot tolerate oral treatment
