    New studies of slavery in medieval Europe. In the Early Middle Ages, slavery did exist in regions touched by the barbarían migration. It tied in with the Román Empire's form of slavery of late antiquity. During the 9t h and lO"1 centuries, the rural society underwent a fundamental change due to the influence of spreading manorialism in the core áreas of Carolingian territories.

    Thus, a specific medieval serfdom emerged from slavery. manumission and liberty, which dominated the core occidental countries - France, Germany and Italy - in the 1 l'h and 12tb centuries.

    At that time, slavery and slave trade continued to be of great importance in Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, and were only gradually losing ground.
