Aulhority as promise and tmposition - Law and aitíhorÜV between late middle andeaiiy modern ages. This article introduces the topic and aims of the section „Law and authonty between late middle and early modern ages", held at the 41" Deutscher Rechtshistorikertag (Saarbrücken, September 2016). Authority can be seen as a promise and, at the same time, as an imposition to the ruled people. Although research on questions of authority is not new, it seems crucial for legal history to follow up new developments in social history and sociology to reassess the role of law in the process of re-organizing authority from the middle ages onwards
