Dos opciones, con sus pros y sus contras, propone el importante escritor portugués para responder la pregunta de si la literatura, ya que no de manera material, puede transformar ética y axiológicamente la vida humana: al afirmarlo, encuentra que la expresión estética verbal, a pesar de haberse empeñado en ello en momentos precisos [la ilustración, el romanticismo, el realismo social] no ha transformado la sociedad de manera definitiva, pues, el mundo seguiría siendo como es sin la obra, por ejemplo, de Goethe. Al negarlo, basándose en la idea de que es la sociedad la que transforma la literatura, halla que esta es en sí un arte irresponsable, al que no se le puede achacar ni el bien ni el mal, y, por tanto, no es posible juzgarla, como pareciera ocurrir hoy día, como un arte frívolo que refleja la ideología vigente. Ante esta disyuntiva irresoluble, el autor propone, finalmente, dirigir la atención no al compromiso de las obras, sino de los autores mismos con su tiempo.

Two options, with their pros and cons, proposes the important Portuguese writer to respond the question of if Literature, since not in a material way, can transform ethics and human life: when affirming it, he finds that aesthetic verbal expression, in spite it has pawned on it at precise moments [the Enlightenment, the Romanticism, the Social Realism has not transformed society in a definitive way, since the world would continue being as it is without the work, for example, of Goethe. When denying it, basing on the idea that it is the society the one that transforms Literature, he finds that this is by itself an irresponsible art, to which neither good nor evil can be attributed, and, therefore, is not possible to judge it, as it seems it is happening nowadays, like a frivolous art that reflects the effective ideology. Faced with this indecisive dilemma, the author proposes, finally, to direct the attention not to the commitment of works, but to the own authors with his time.
