The Old Spanish Bible with glosses by rabi Moshe Arragel (1422-1430) is a literary monument of late medieval Castilian prose and a privileged source for reconstructing the Jewish contributions to the intellectual history of 15th century Spain. In this essay, we offer a close reading of three of Arragel's exegetical glosses to Genesis in order to showcase how the rabbi educates his Christian readers about the diversity on Jewish approaches to biblical interpretation and his own intellectual preferences.
Selective attention is paid to the pragmatic figures that frame Arragel's pedagogical efforts.
