L'économie de l'image dans la sphère intelligible (sur un sermon d'Alain de Lille)

    Relais de l'une des plus fameuses définitions de Dieu — phrase qui a fait le tour de la pensée occidentale de Parménide à Pascal — le sermon d'Alain de Lille met en jeu une conception noétique héritée de Boèce, une forme de cosmologie « allégorique » proche de la Cosmographia de Bernard Silvestre et une « rhétorique » de la démonstration logique empruntée à Gilbert de la Porrée. L'article propose l'interprétation d'un hapax et analyse le vocabulaire spécifique de l'image forgé par l'auteur afin de désigner le processus qui conduit l'intellect à concevoir une définition de ce qui demeure en tout état de cause indéfinissable.

    Dedicated to one of the most famost definitions of God in the occidental philosophy, from Parmenide to Pascal, the Sermo of Alanus ab Insulis shows the heritage of the noetic conceptions of Boethius and uses both all the allegorical forms of cosmology, as it has already been done by Bernardus Silvestris in his Cosmographia, and the rhetorical demonstration of an aporia, as it was usual in the XIIth century after Gilbertus Porretanus. The article proposes the interpretation of an hapax and analyses the vocabulary of the image, which was specially concieved by the author to demonstrate the way the human mind is steel able to give a definition about what it recognises as being in any way exempt of definition.
