Multiple pregnancies currently comprise 3% of all live births in the United States but are responsible for an estimated 17% of all preterm births, more than 25% of very low birth weight (VLBW) infants, and nearly 20% of neonatal deaths [1]. The high-risk nature of these gestations is reflected in this disparity. Recent decades have seen a rise in the number of twins and high-order multiple gestations, attributed in large part to the increasing numbers of older mothers and use of assisted conception.
