  Uganda: youth in the Lake Albert region The eastern shores of Lake Albert, in Uganda, have become the focus of newfound attention given recent oil prospecting in the area. The national media have reported on the dissatisfaction of youth regarding both compensation for their land and in terms of opportunities for training and employment. This article shows how the “youth” category has been politically instrumentalized and how processes for empowering youth have been transformed by the prospect of economic renewal. Despite expectations, most actual opportunities are a product of overall growth in the region rather than a result of the oil industry.

  La rive est du lac Albert, en Ouganda, fait l’objet d’une attention nouvelle du fait de l’exploration pétrolière récente. Les médias nationaux font écho à l’insatisfaction des jeunes, que ce soit au sujet de compensations pour leur terre ou des opportunités de formation et d’emploi. Cet article montre comment la catégorie « jeunes » est instrumentalisée politiquement et que les processus d’autonomisation des jeunes sont transformés par la perspective d’un renouveau économique. En dépit des attentes, les opportunités réelles découlent de la croissance globale de la région plus que du secteur pétrolier.
