The author of this article asks if a round coin can have a beak in order to justify the expression “il becco di un quattrino”.The answer is obviously negative. But, investigating among words and their history, he found “bezzo”, of German origin, meaning a small coin that then changed in “becco”, just in the area of the dialect where you find next to “beccare” the synonym “bezzicare” (together with “bezzicata/beccata”, “bazzicatura/beccatura”). Therefore at least from the seventeenth century who has no money certainly is left without a “becco di un quattrino”.

Una moneta rotonda può avere un becco così da giustifcare l’espressione “il becco di un quattrino”, s’è domandato l’autore dell’articolo. E la risposta è no, com’è evidente. Ma, scavando tra le parole e la loro storia, ha trovato “bezzo”, derivato dal tedesco, con il signifcato di “piccola moneta” che poi si è trasformato in “becco”, proprio nella zona dialettale dove accanto a “beccare” si trova il sinonimo “bezzicare” (con “bezzicata/beccata”, “bazzicatura/beccatura”). E così almeno dal Secento chi è senza un soldo si può dire che sia rimasto senza un “becco di un quattrino”.
