  • Resumen
    • PURPOSE: To analyze the clinical outcomes and visual quality obtained after implantation of the AT LISA® tri 839MP trifocal lens.

SETTING: Hospital Clínico Universitario Lozano Blesa, Zaragoza, Spain.

METHODS: This prospective series of cases study comprised twenty cataractous eyes from 10 patients who underwent crystalline lens phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation. Near, intermediate and distance visual acuity (VA) using the ETDRS chart and contrast sensitivity were measured before and 3 months after surgery. Optical quality parameters obtained were modulation transfer function cutoff frequency (MTFcutoff), objective scattering index (OSI), root mean square of total aberrations (RMS total), root mean square of total higher order aberrations (RMS HOAs) and spherical aberration.

RESULTS: Mean postoperative uncorrected distance, intermediate and near VA were: 0.09  ±  0.16, 0.30 ± 0.11 and 0.18 ± 0.11 logMAR (mean ± SD), respectively.

Mean postoperative OSI, MTFcutoff, RMS, RMS HOAs and spherical aberration were:

1.94  ±  0.73; 29.25  ±  9.8 cycles per degree; 0.88 ± 0.46 µm; 0.67 ± 0.71 µm and 0.06  ±  0.06  µm, respectively. Statistically significant correlations were found between RMS total and VA values for distance and intermediate distances and also between MTFcutoff and spherical aberration values.

CONCLUSION: The AT LISA® tri 839MP multifocal implant permits optimal restoration of vision after cataract surgery, providing excellent near and distance vision and acceptable intermediate vision. The trifocal design of this lens does not negatively impact objective visual quality parameters measured using the double-pass system and aberrometry.
