  • Resumen
    • Management of a patient with a severe burn injury is a long-term process addressing the local burn wound care and immediate and progressive systemic consequences of the injury.

Critical aspects of emergency and intensive care management of severe burns include fluid resuscitation, cardiovascular stabilization, respiratory support, pain control, and local management of burn wounds.

Respiratory injury should be highly suspected in burn patients, particularly with severe burns.

Patients with more than 15% of total body surface area nonsuperficial burns are at risk of developing burn shock and require attentive fluid therapy and gastric ulcer prophylaxis.

Profound and persistent metabolic changes are seen in patients with severe burns.
