    This article presents the innovations of the grammatical description of Jerônimo Soares Barbosa in his work Gramática Filosófica (1822), in what concerns the study of orthoepy and orthography, whose objective is to show the avant-gardism of the author in relation to the study of language. Soares Barbosa’s description reveals to us important aspects to be observed in the study of language, how to perceive the differences between spoken and written language, as well as being attentive to the differences present in its use, coming from sociocultural aspects, which characterize the variation linguistics. The aspects, then, pointed out were observed from the perspective of Linguistic Historiography.

    Neste artigo apresentam-se as inovações da descrição gramatical de Jerônimo Soares Barbosa em sua obra Gramática filosófica (1822), no que se refere ao estudo da ortoépia e da ortografia, cujo objetivo é mostrar o vanguardismo do autor em relação ao estudo da língua. A descrição de Soares Barbosa nos revela à época aspectos importantes a serem observados no estudo da língua, como percebermos as diferenças entre língua falada e língua escrita, assim como estarmos atentos às diferenças presentes em seu uso, provenientes de aspectos socioculturais, que caracterizam a variação linguística.

    Os aspectos, então, assinalados foram observados a partir da perspectiva da Historiografia Linguística.
