Los documentos iconográficos de Santa Apolonia, patrona de los dentistas, custodiados en la Biblioteca Nacional de España

    La Biblioteca Nacional de España, centro depositario del Patrimonio Bibliográfico y Documental de España, reúne y conserva todas las publicaciones realizadas en el país que ingresan por el cumplimiento del Depósito Legal y es la cabecera del Sistema Español de Bibliotecas. Además, en sus fondos, guarda otros archivos tales como grabados, pintura, audiovisuales y música. En la devoción cristiana, Santa Apolonia figura como la patrona de los dentistas.

    Aunque Apolonia fue martirizada en el siglo III, rompiendo y arrancándole los dientes, todos los datos apuntan al siglo XIII d. C. como el inicio de la devoción hacia esta santa, a la cual se le pedían curaciones de enfermedades de la boca y de los dientes. Además de su historia y de su leyenda, a través de los siglos, han llegado hasta nuestros días numerosas reproducciones, fundamentalmente pictóricas. La Biblioteca Nacional de España custodia una serie de documentos gráficos, hasta hoy poco explorados, sobre esta santa y que los autores de este trabajo pretenden dar a conocer.

    Durante el estudio de los fondos gráficos de la Biblioteca, se descubrieron veintidós estampas de Santa Apolonia, que no figuran en las bases de datos accesibles a los investigadores y al público en general.

    The National Library of Spain in Madrid, the repository of the Bibliographical and Documentary Heritage of Spain, not only brings together and conserves all publications issued in the country, in any format, in compliance with the Legal Deposit regulations, and heads the Spanish Library System, but also keeps in its collections other archives such as etchings, paintings, audiovisuals and music.

    In the Christian faith, Saint Apollonia is the patron saint of dentists.

    Although Apollonia, having had her teeth broken and pulled out, was martyred in the third century, all the evidence points to the thirteenth century AD as the start of devotion to this saint, from whom cures for diseases of the mouth and of the teeth were sought.

    Furthermore to history and legends through the centuries, have survived to our days numerous reproductions mainly pictorical. The National Library of Spain hosts a series of graphic documents, so far unexplored of this saint, which the authors of this study pretend to raise awareness.

    During study of the graphic collection of the National Library of Spain, twenty-two prints of Saint Apollonia were found that did not feature in the databases accessible to researchers and to the general public.
