After tracing the most significant achievements in Reinhardt’s and Hofmannsthal’s careers before 1903, this paper focuses on Elektra. Tragödie in einem Aufzug frei nach Sophokles (Elektra. Tragedy in one act after Sophocles), since it represents the poet’s first collaboration with the famous theatre director. Through the analysis of the decisions taken during the writing and staging process, the paper discusses both the way Reinhardt’s imaginative direction influenced Hofmannsthal’s development as a playwright and the role that Hofmannsthal’s dramatic production had in Reinhardt’s theatrical work

Dopo aver ripercorso le fasi che portano al sodalizio artistico tra Reinhardt e Hofmannsthal, il presente contributo si sofferma su Elektra. Tragödie in einem Aufzug frei nach Sophokles (Elettra. Tragedia in un atto liberamente tratta da Sofocle), in quanto prima delle numerose collaborazioni tra i due artisti. Alla luce delle scelte effettuate per la stesura del dramma e per la sua effettiva messinscena verrà analizzato sia il contributo che la concezione registica reinhardtiana fornisce ai testi di Hofmannsthal, sia il ruolo che l’opera dello scrittore ricopre nel teatro di Max Reinhardt.
