Within Hofmannsthal’s oeuvre, which is characterized by a particularly strong relationship with the heritage of previous centuries, the Greek antiquity constitutes doubtless a major source of themes and motifs. Yet the Antiquity seems to have lost the normative role that it usually had in the humanistic culture, and becomes just one of the many traditions that are woven together in the modernity. The article thematises this circumstance, such as it is at the centre of the essay Augenblicke in Griechenland: the ancient Greece, as a product of numerous cultural layers, is not immediately available, except through of a sudden mystical epiphany.

All’interno dell’opera di Hofmannsthal, caratterizzata da un rapporto particolarmente intenso con le tradizioni culturali dei secoli precedenti, l’antichità greca costituisce una delle principali fonti di temi e motivi. Essa sembra però aver smarrito il ruolo normativo che la cultura classico-umanistica le attribuisce, diviene piuttosto occasione di un confronto con il passato che coinvolge anche altre epoche. L’articolo intende porre a tema questa circostanza, così come si riflette nel saggio "Augenblicke in Griechenland" (Momenti in Grecia, 1917): prodotto di stratificazioni accumulate nel corso del tempo, la grecità non appare accessibile, se non attraverso un’improvvisa esperienza epifanica.
