    Traditional literature on the Irish Republican Army (IRA) has unanimously concluded that during the War of Independence (1919-1921), Irish Republicans purposely targeted ex-service men in Ireland to punish them for their enlistment in the British Army during the First World War. However, a more thorough analysis of the testimony provided by such survivors in the aftermath of the Great War reveals that few of them actually believed that the acts of violence they faced were a form of retribution for their enlistment in the British Army. Furthermore, the IRA purposely recruited veterans for their military know-how and encouraged them to train new recruits to defeat the British Army. It is therefore difficult to support the hypothesis according to which the IRA would have deliberately and systematically targeted ex-service men to punish them for their involvement in the Great War.

    Les études actuelles consacrées à l’Armée républicaine irlandaise (IRA) concluent que pendant la guerre d’indépendance (1919-1921) les républicains ciblaient délibérément les survivants des tranchées pour les punir de leur engagement auprès des Britanniques au cours de la Première Guerre mondiale. Or, en sollicitant des témoignages de rescapés, il s’avère que très peu d’entre eux imputent leurs souffrances à leur participation au premier conflit mondial. Par ailleurs, l’IRA approchait volontairement les vétérans pour leur savoir-faire militaire et les incitait à entrainer les nouvelles recrues pour défaire l’armée britannique. En ce sens, il est difficile de soutenir les thèses selon lesquelles les républicains s’acharnaient de façon systématique sur les anciens combattants de la Grande Guerre.
