    Este artículo estudia dos años de la formación de Roberto Matta en Chile, 1933-1935, omitidos por el artista en el proceso de autoconstrucción de su identidad. A través de referencias indirectas que ofrecen indicios o testimonios, del registro de ciertos eventos del contexto histórico de esos años y de ciertas fuentes directas, se muestra que Roberto Matta no parte a Europa a comienzos del año 1933, como señala él reiteradamente en sus entrevistas y los biógrafos y críticos que le siguen, sino dos años después, en 1935, lo que diferencia apreciablemente su trayectoria histórica de la proyección de sí mismo que ha elaborado el pintor.

    Tis article studies two years of Roberto Matta’s higher education in Chile, during 1933- 1935, left out by the artist in the process of selfconstruction of his identity. Indirect references that ofer indications and testimonies of certain events, about the historical context of those years, and some direct sources, show that Roberto Matta didn’t travel to Europe at the begining of 1933, as he and his biographers and critics have said in a number of ocassions, but two years later, in 1935. Tis marks a huge diference between Matta’s historic career path and the projection that the painter elaborated of himself.
