El presente artículo estudia el comercio entre España y China entre 1900 y 1930 a través de los anuarios de las Aduanas Marítimas de China. Esta institución fue un pilar institucional del sistema de puertos abiertos y sus archivos contienen información tanto del comercio bilateral sino-español como de la población española que vivió en China y sus actividades económicas. Su función era garantizar las condiciones de libre comercio estipuladas en los tratados desiguales que China firmó con las potencias extranjeras. Sin embargo, a pesar de la presencia española y su participación en la administración de las aduanas chinas, el comercio sino-español fue muy débil y deficitario para España. Este artículo intenta explicar las características de la comunidad española en China y las razones de la debilidad del comercio sino-español.

The present article studies the Sino-Spanish trade between 1900 and 1930, through the annual reports of the Chinese Maritime Customs. This institution was one of the mainstays of the treaty port system, and its archives contain information about the Sino-Spanish trade and the Spanish population that lived in China, as well as their economic activities. Its function was to guarantee the conditions of free trade that China had signed with the foreign powers. However, despite the Spanish presence and the participation of this community in the custom service, the Sino-Spanish trade remained weak and with a negative balance for Spain. This article aims to explain the characteristics of the Spanish community in China and the reasons of the weakness of the Sino-Spanish trade.
