Smokers who abruptly quit smoking are less likely to be smoking 6 months later compared with those who gradually quit, according to a recent randomized controlled noninferiority trial (Lindson-Hawley N et al. Ann Intern Med. doi:10.7326/M14-2805 [published online March 15, 2016]). Clinicians should advise smokers that quitting all at once is more successful than tapering, concluded the researchers, but better methods are also needed to support those who prefer to quit slowly.
