Investigators at 6 institutions who are exploring the molecular mechanisms underlying combined vaccine adjuvants have been awarded a total of $3.1 million in grants by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) (http://1.usa.gov/1V4MCbS). Vaccine adjuvants are substances such as aluminum salts and oil and water emulsions that boost vaccine effectiveness. Such agents can improve the antigen-stimulated immune response in individuals with weak immune systems, reduce the need for booster immunizations, and enable vaccine manufacturers to use fewer antigens in the vaccine. The researchers who received the NIAID grants will study which adjuvant combinations work well together, how the interactions between adjuvants can be leveraged, and how adjuvant combinations interact with the immune system.
