Resumen de Students’ Shifting Tobacco Habits

  • Tobacco continues to lure US middle and high school students, as trendy e-cigarettes have erased hard-won progress in curtailing conventional tobacco use.

New research from CDC and the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products shows that since 2011, overall tobacco use among youths has held steady, but many traded their cigarettes and cigars for e-cigarettes and hookah pipes.

Data from National Youth Tobacco Surveys showed that e-cigarette use increased from 1.5% to 16% of high school students and from 0.6% to 5.3% of middle school students between 2011 and 2015. Hookah pipe use also increased, but not as dramatically (Singh T et al. MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2016;65[14]:361-367).
