Sleep-deprived teens have more to contend with than being late for school or missing a test. Too little sleep may lead them to take risks that can result in traffic crashes—a leading cause of death in adolescents.
A CDC analysis of data from 50 370 high school students showed that those who reported sleeping 7 or fewer hours per school night were more likely to avoid using seat belts or bike helmets, drink or text while driving, or ride with an intoxicated driver than teens who sleep an average 9 hours per night (Wheaton AG et al. MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2016;65[13]:337-341).
