Resumen de Reinventing the wheel: :Mineral tyre technology

Laura Syrett, Kasia Patel

  • Speaking at the IDTechEx Europe show in April, which was held in Berlin, Germany, Rudie Campagne, president of Switzerland-based Vittoria Industries Ltd, which makes tyres for bikes used in some of the world's top cycling events including the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia, said that Vittoria's graphene-based models developed in partnership with Italian company, Directa Plus Spa, had shattered existing performance standards for tyres used in the sport.

At present, the graphene is contained only in the tyre's tread. "We haven't put it in the casing compounds yet," Campagne explain-ed, but said that it should be possible to add graphene to the wheel casing without increasing the weight.

"What constitutes 'graphene' is a semantic issue," [Giulio Cesareo] said. "We don't care, as long as it works."
