La historia de al-Andalus ha sido elaborada fundamentalmente por españoles o hispanistas. Por ello, su mayor o menor integración en la de España ha variado a lo largo del tiempo en función de la visión predominante sobre ésta y su historia. Se expone el impacto sobre la cuestión de la larga crisis de la conciencia nacional española y se ofrece el concepto de frontera como marco explicativo principal de las relaciones entre al-Andalus y España.

The history of al-Andalus has been mainly written by Spaniards and Hispanists. Therefore, its integration in the history of Spain has been conditioned by the predominant views existing in each period about Spain and its history. This article analyzes the impact of this question on the long-standing crisis of Spanish national identity. It also offers the concept of frontier as a framework to explain the relationship between al-Andalus and Spain.
