The term Hispania was not perceived as a simple geographical concept in the Middle Ages. Since its inception, it was a reality that denoted a clear political meaning. However, this meaning oscillates between an assertion of an idealized unity, which basically was claimed by Castile particularly since the 13th century, and a constitutively plural reality, perceived mainly by the political entities outside León and Castile.
