El artículo describe la primera visita de Fidel Castro a Uruguay a inicios de mayo de 1959. En aquella oportunidad, el joven revolucionario arribaba a América del Sur para participar de una instancia internacional en Buenos Aires. Fue como parte de ese periplo que también había incluido antes su visita a Estados Unidos, Canadá, un breve pasaje por Trinidad y Tobago, Brasil y Argentina, que Castro decidió su frenético pasaje por Uruguay. Durante las 44 horas que permaneció en el país su agenda fue intensa: conferencia improvisada al bajar del avión; reunión con el canciller uruguayo y en el Consejo Nacional de Gobierno; comparecencia en televisión; visita a los sitios afectados por las inundaciones; orador en un acto público multitudinario; y reunión confidencial con una delegación estudiantil en el hotel donde se hospedaba. Nutrido de fuentes diversas –prensa, información diplomática de varios repositorios, etc.-, el artículo explorará especialmente aquellas consultadas en dependencias del Servicio de Inteligencia y Enlace de la Policía uruguaya, que siguió de cerca lo relacionado a la visita del revolucionario caribeño.
