  The analysis of the process of mobilization of those affected by the rupture of the Algodões Dam, located in the municipality of Cocal, in the Brazilian state of Piauí, is the objective of this work, giving visibility to the objectives, challenges and strategies of their struggles in relations with public institutions.

  The rupture of the dam in 2009 generated serious socio-environmental impacts, initiating a long quest for rights, starting with the creation of an association to repair damages and, in particular, to guarantee the payment of indemnities and other benefits. Developed with a qualitative methodology and the use of diverse techniques, the research identifies that the mobilization is within the framework of associativism of a strongly institutional character, although with direct actions of political confrontation, in general, directed at the state government.

  A análise do processo de mobilização dos atingidos pelo rompimento da Barragem Algodões, no município de Cocal-PI, é o objetivo deste trabalho, conferindo visibilidade aos objetivos, aos desafios e às estratégias de suas lutas nas relações com a institucionalidade pública. A ruptura da barragem, em 2009, gerou graves impactos socioambientais, iniciando longa jornada por direitos, a partir da criação de uma associação com vistas a reparar os danos e, em particular, garantir o pagamento de indenizações e outros benefícios. Desenvolvida com metodologia qualitativa e uso de técnicas diversas, a pesquisa identifica que a mobilização inscreve-se nos marcos de associativismo de caráter marcadamente institucional, embora com ações diretas de confronto político, em geral, dirigidas ao governo estadual.
