    • "In terms of new products, the fertiliser industry has lagged behind the seed industry. New products are being developed and sold, but most are used in developed economies for high-value crops," [Amit Roy] added. "This is a global problem and it requires a global intellect to find a solution." The industry's response to the problem is, however, "understandable", Roy said. The large upfront capital costs of new plants and the requirement to meet rapidly rising fertiliser demand in developing regions has led to a primary "manage for tonnage" approach, which is then followed by in-plant and in-field yield optimisation and problem mitigation.

      Roy also quoted a co-authored 2008 paper led by YS Shivay, entitled "Effect of zinc-enriched urea on productivity, zinc uptake and efficiency of an aromatic rice wheat". The paper said that a single application of zinc-enriched urea in its study had increased rice yield by 27% in the first year and by 21% in the second year.
