Los últimos días de Pompeya de Lord Lytton y la pintura "Pompeyista" española

    En este estudio se analizan los cuadros de la pintura española de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX que buscaron inspiración en la célebre novela Los últimos días de Pompeya de Edward George Bulwer-Lytton (1834). De unos, los menos, lo sabemos porque claramente así lo expresa la bibliografía en donde se encuentran citados. De otros, los más, por haber comparado los autores sus asuntos con los textos correspondientes de la novela de los que fueron extraídos. Se contribuye con este trabajo al conocimiento de una modalidad de pintura de nuestro siglo XIX, la de los "pompeyistas", prácticamente ignorada, y que tuvo sus principales cultivadores entre los pintores españoles que fueron a Roma

    In this study the author analyses those Spanish paintings dating from the second half of the 19th century that were inspired by Edward George Bulwer Lytton's celebrated novel The Last Days of Pompeii (1834). In the case of some of these works there are literary references to demonstrate this relationship, but in the majority of cases the author has checked the themes of the paintings against specific events in the novel from which they were extracted. This study contributes to our knowledge of a type of Spanish 19th painting, a late form of "Pompeian Revival", that has gone virtually unknown, and was practiced mainly by those Spanish painters who went to Rome.
