  • Resumen
    • This study draws attention on a small number of cartographers who accompanied Emperor Maximilian in 1864 to Mexico as part of the Austrian corps of volunteers.

We try to follow the track of a set of square maps, drawn by Ferdinand von (Fernando de) Rosenzweig with the assistance of Alois (Luis) Bolland before the fall of the Empire in 1867, which covered the area of the city of Puebla and its surroundings.

Pieces of the original were recently found and reunited in the Mapoteca Manuel Orozco y Berra in Mexico City, being in excellent shape and a rare document of k.k. Austrian cartographic design. After the downfall of the Empire in 1867 Rosenzweig, Bolland, and two other members of the team stayed in the country and gained a considerable reputation as civil engineers with the preparation of maps of haciendas and mining areas.
