  Background. The construct of meaning plays an important role in the theories and models that inform occupational therapy; yet little research has examined the construct of meaning within the professional practices of occupational therapists. Purpose. The purpose of this research is to gain a deeper understanding of the meanings occupational therapists identify within their professional practice occupations. Methods. A phenomenological methodology was adopted for this study. Eight paediatric occupational therapists participated in in-depth, semi-structured interviews, which were tape-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed. Findings. Seven major themes were identified: Relating to clients as human beings, making a positive difference, working as a team, permission to have fun, congruency of values, support in the workplace, and artistry of practice. Implications. The study contributes to knowledge about accounts of meaning in the working lives of paediatric occupational therapists and highlights potential implications for therapists, clients, teams, organizations, and for the profession.

  Description. Le construit du sens joue un rôle important dans les théories et les modèles qui sous-tendent l'ergothérapie; pourtant peu de recherches ont porté sur le construit du sens attribué aux pratiques professionnelles des ergothérapeutes. But. Le but de cette étude est de mieux comprendre le sens que les ergothérapeutes attribuent aux occupations associées à leur pratique professionnelle. Méthodologie. Une méthodologie phénoménologique a été employée pour mener cette étude. Huit ergothérapeutes en pédiatrie ont participé à des entrevues semi-structurées en profondeur, qui ont été enregistrées à l'aide d'un magnétophone, transcrites et analysées. Sept principaux thèmes ont été ciblés : se sentir des affinités avec les clients en tant qu'êtres humains, faire une différence positive, travailler en équipe, se donner la permission d'avoir du plaisir, congruence des valeurs, soutien dans lemilieu de travail et art de la pratique. Conséquences. Cette étude permet de rehausser les connaissances sur les descriptions du sens que les ergothérapeutes en pédiatrie attribuent à leur vie professionnelle et met en relief les conséquences possibles pour les ergothérapeutes, les clients, les équipes, les organisations et la profession.
