    In this article, through the study of documentary sources, we seek to insert Jaboticabal, a town in northeastern São Paulo state, in the dynamics of modernity and modern experience in Brazil. Process started in the big cities, in the nineteenth century, and because of the coffee economy, also experienced in the cities of São Paulo state between the end of the nineteenth and early twentiethcentury modernity that modernity is a paradoxical thing and that brings with itself the reverse, anti-modern. The new “modern practices” are viewed as tools to forge the new modern man.

    Neste artigo, através do estudo de fontes documentais, buscamos inserir Jaboticabal, cidade situada no nordeste do Estado de São Paulo, na dinâmica da modernidade e experiência moderna no Brasil. Processo iniciado nas grandes capitais, já no século XIX, e, em virtude da economia cafeeira, também vivenciado nas cidades do interior paulista entre o fim do século XIX e início do século XX, tal modernidade será uma modernidade paradoxal e que traz junto a si o seu reverso, o antimoderno. As novas “práticas modernas”, são encaradas como ferramentas para forjar o novo homem moderno.
