The philosophy of history, which apprehends society as a category of time, did not come out of nothing. It was grounded in the belief that society establishes an order of reality that escapes the immobility of natural rule without breaking up into a chaos of individual destinies. Striving to steer clear of the two pitfalls of necessity and arbitrariness, it reconciles the idea of breaking from the past with the idea of continuity. The French Revolution was first interpreted in terms of a disintegration of the time scale, and as such it came to be seen as the founding experience, which called for the emergence of the philosophy of history.

La philosophie de l’histoire, qui appréhende la société sous la catégorie du temps, ne naît pas de rien. Elle suppose que la société constitue un ordre de réalité capable de s’arracher au règne immobile de la nature sans pourtant s’éparpiller en un chaos de destinées individuelles. Entre l’écueil de la nécessité et celui de l’arbitraire, elle articule difficilement rupture et continuité. La Révolution française, d’abord interprétée comme la rupture de la chaîne des temps, fut l’expérience fondatrice qui rendait urgente l’élaboration de la philosophie de l’histoire.
