Tourism Graduate Education and Research in China: contributions of Geography

  • This study was conducted to provide an overview of China's tourism graduate programs, describe the contributions of the discipline of geography to the country's tourism graduate education and research, and analyze the types of geography-based tourism research activities. Using the data from two surveys and a literature review, it was found that tourism graduate programs were multidisciplinary not by design, but by default. The discipline of geography has contributed significantly to the training of tourism scholars and the evolution of geography-based tourism research. Tourism research activities in China could be classified into five clusters that correspond with the stages of the country's tourism development. Implications of the findings were discussed in the context of China's reform in its educational systems
