    Objetivo: identificar, conocer y describir la percepción que tienen los y las terapeutas ocupacionales sobre su rol en los centros penitenciarios de la Región Metropolitana de Chile. Métodos: la metodología utilizada fue cualitativa, la recolección de datos se realizó durante el primer semestre del año 2016 a través de dos focus group con un total de 16 terapeutas ocupacionales. Resultados: los principales resultados fueron que los terapeutas ocupacionales trabajaban con esta población por vocación de trabajo, no tenían una preparación para ingresar a Gendarmería de Chile y ocasionalmente el sentido de la ocupación no se aplicaba a la intervención. Conclusiones: las principales conclusiones fueron que la Terapia Ocupacional en personas adultas privadas de libertad aún es un área por descubrir. Existe poca evidencia sobre el rol que desempeñaban los terapeutas ocupacionales en los Centros Penitenciarios de Chile, y sobre los beneficios que conlleva la práctica de esta disciplina en adultos infractores de ley. Los terapeutas ocupacionales que se encontraban ejerciendo la profesión en las cárceles de la Región Metropolitana, mantienen una estructura de intervención impuesta por Gendarmería de Chile, lo que restringe el desempeño del paradigma ocupacional y dificulta la visión integral de quienes se encuentran recluidos.

    Objective: the aim of this research is to identify, to know and to describe the perception that occupational therapists have about their role in prisions of Metropolitan Region of Chile. Methods: the methodology used was qualitative, the data collection was performed during the first half of 2016 through two focus groups with a total of 16 occupational therapists.

    Results: the main results were that the occupational therapists worked with this population because of their vocation for work, they did not have a preparation to join the Gendarmerie of Chile, and occasionally the occupation´s sense was not applied to the intervention. Conclusion: the main conclusions were that Occupational Therapy in adults deprived of freedom is still an area to be discovered. There is little evidence on the role played by occupational therapists in the Penitentiary Centers of Chile, and on the benefits that the practice of this discipline entails for delinquent adults. The occupational therapists who were practicing the profession in the prisons of the Metropolitan Region maintain an intervention structure imposed by the Gendarmerie of Chile, which restricts the performance of the occupational paradigm and hinders the integral vision of those who are imprisoned.
