    El proceso de asignación de armerías a los conquistadores de Indias se iniciaba con la presentación de una solicitud que incluía un boceto del escudo pretendido; continuaba con la intervención de un perito al servicio del Consejo de Indias que marcaba en el dibujo los cuarteles que debían ser enmendados, eliminados, o substituidos por otros de nueva factura; y finalizaba con el despacho de la cédula de concesión en la que figuraba el escudo otorgado, diseñado siguiendo las instrucciones del corrector, junto con su descripción. Se han analizado doce solicitudes fechadas entre 1531 y 1537 que permiten delimitar las respectivas contribuciones de los pintores que trasladaban los deseos del peticionario al trazado de formas heráldicas, y de los expertos que revisaban la idoneidad de éstas, integrándose así las inventivas de ambos personajes en la síntesis del producto final.

    The process of applying for a grant of arms by the Spanish conquistadores started with the submission of a sketch showing the solicitant’s proposal; continued under the supervision of a Council of Indias officer, who marked on the sketch those quarters that must be revised, omitted or replaced by new ones; and finished with the issue of a royal patent including a drawing of the arms bestowed and their description, both following the reviewer’s instructions. The analysis of twelve petitions, dated between 1531 and 1537, allows to delimit the respective contributions of the painters translating the petitioner’s wishes to heraldic forms, and the officers revising their suitability. Thus, the inventive of each partner was integrated in the synthesis of the final product.
