  Existe una percepción muy extendida de que las mezquitas juegan un papel central para las comunidades musulmanas en Europa. A pesar de que han jugado un innegable protagonismo en el proceso de recuperación de la práctica religiosa de estos colectivos, su centralidad puede ponerse en duda mediante el análisis de las nuevas funciones que adquiere en su contacto con las sociedades europeas, entre ellas la reformulación de su rol socializador. Este artículo quiere poner en evidencia esa condición descentrada de estas instituciones religiosas, como manera de poder plantear los retos futuros que deberán abordar.

  There is a widespread perception that mosques play a central role for Muslim communities in Europe. Although they have played an undeniable role in the reincorporation of the religious practice of these groups, their centrality could be questioned by analyzing the new roles that mosques acquire in its contact with European societies, including the reformulation of its socializing role. This article wants to highlight the misplaced condition of these religious institutions as a way of presenting the future challenges that must be addressed.
