Survivors of critical illness encounter a variety of challenges, even after the acute illness has resolved. Observational studies have documented physical, cognitive,1 and mental2 impairments affecting survivors after a stay in the intensive care unit (ICU). As these data have accumulated, clinicians have sought to better understand what is now called “post-ICU syndrome”3 and to develop interventions both during and after the ICU stay to attenuate the effects.
