The field of Odontology has experienced great advancements in the last decades in relation to the etiology and pathogenesis of caries; the existing association between the presence of microorganisms (Streptococcus Mutans and Lactobacillus), with their triple acidogenic, acidophil and aciduric capacity, and the prevalence of caries has been recognized from infancy to the elder. The elderly are the study population of this research paper.
The main goal of this study was to evaluate the oral microbiological state of the elderly in retirement homes. This was performed by evaluating the presence of S. Mutans and Lactobacillus in saliva, employing the CRT@ BACTERIA method. Values exceeding 105 UFC/ml in saliva were considered to be high risk for caries in the population studied.
