Agotado el período llamado Romaticismo, predominante sobre todo en Alemania, tomó auge el positivismo comtiano. Cuando los adalides de Comte proclamaban su señorío, apareció el libro epocal de Virchow : Die cellular pathologie, trabajo elaborado pacientemente y que señala en la medicina un hito apreciable, pues que todo el saber patológico actual deriva en él. COmo pasa con todo descubrimiento genial, el de Virchow no fué aceptado de inmediato, sino que tardaron pocos años, menos de los que esperaba Harvey, para incorporarlo al acervo científico.
