Resumen de Zoönosen in historisch perspectief: Wat kunnen we leren van strubbelingen rond Salmonellae en veevoer in Nederland (1955-1965)?

Floor Haalboom

  • Lack of medical-veterinary collaboration is often analysed as the problem in present-day dealings with zoonotic diseases, for instance by the One Health movement. This problem analysis, however, has been repeated throughout the entire twentieth century. In this paper, I argue that the collaboration argument can distract attention from more important problems at stake, using the case study of the salmonellosis problem in the Netherlands (1955-1965). The controversy between a public health camp and an agricultural camp on whether Salmonella-contaminated fodder components should be sterilised or not in these years, shows that medical-veterinary collaboration occurred extensively within both camps. Indeed, boundaries between the disciplines were far less important than boundaries based on conflicts of interests, and clashes of political and scientific-philosophical views between the two camps.
