Resumen de De beoefening van veterinaire geschiedenis in de afgelopen decennia

Peter A. Koolmees

  • Traditionally, this field was mainly studied by veterinarians writing stories about veterinarians for a veterinary public. As a young branch of science history, veterinary history has been attracting more attention from scholars in other disciplines during the last decades. This is also due to the popularity and changing position of animals in society. In this paper the changing approach within veterinary history is examined. A shift from uncritical success stories of progress to contextual critical studies including human-animal relationships, animals (and micro-organisms) as actors in world history, the social history of veterinary medicine and environmental history becomes evident. Institutionalization took place in the foundation of the Netherlands Veterinary History Society and its bulletin Argos. Lectures and courses in this field became part of the veterinary curriculum. These developments resulted in a growing number of scientific meetings, papers, Bachelor and PhD theses, and other books on veterinary history
