  A lo largo de la historia en la costa africana, el periodo precolonial se caracterizaba en lo que hoy es el territorio marfileño, por una diversidad de pueblos con sus respectivos sistemas políticos, jurídicos, económicos y sociales donde existían diferencias que luego van a persistir con ciertas modificaciones por el proceso de colonización. Los Portugueses fueron los primeros en instalar sus fuertes sobre la costa, con principal punto de apoyo en el fuerte de Saint-Georges-de-la-Mine (actual ELMINA en Ghana) construido en 1481. Fue en la primera década del siglo XVI, sin embargo, cuando se inició realmente la trata esclavista con el desembarco en las Indias Occidentales del primer cargamento de África. Los últimos cargamentos debieron llegar hacia 1880, pocos años después de que la esclavitud fuese abolida oficialmente en Brasil y Cuba

  Throughout history in the African coast, the precolonial period was characterized in what is now the Ivorian territory, by a variety of peoples with their respective political, legal, economic and social systems where differences will persist then existed modifications by the process of colonization. The Portuguese were the first to install their strengths on the coast, with main support in the fort of Saint-Georges-de-la-Mine (current ELMINA in Ghana) built in 1481.
