José Bonaparte, rey de España bajo la égida de su hermano Napoleón, dedicó atención a obras arquitectónicas y artísticas en Madrid que proyectasen una imagen positiva de su régimen. Suelen destacarse sus reformas urbanas, y entre ellas el entorno del Palacio Real. Pero merecen también atención los cambios ornamentales en el interior de esta residencia regia, símbolo del poder y de sus ideales. Los nuevos usos de las salas dieron lugar a remodelaciones decorativas donde se integraban las pinturas antiguas con nuevo mobiliario y tapicería, expresión del gusto cosmopolita europeo de cuño parisino

Joseph Bonaparte, king of Spain under the aegis of his brother Napoleon, devoted attention to architectural and artistic works in Madrid that projected a positive image of his regime. Their urban reforms are often emphasized, and among them the surroundings of the royal palace. But the ornamental changes inside this regal residence, symbol of power and its ideals, deserve also attention. The new uses of he rooms gave rise to decorative remodeling where the old paintings were integrated with new furniture and upholstery, an expression of the European cosmopolitan taste of Parisian veneer.
