Resumen de Asia-Pacific leading world's corundum production

Myles McCormick

  • [superscript] No place like chrome: As well as occurring as the gemstone, ruby, the colour of Dorothy's famous slippers in The Wizard of Oz, industrial grade corundum is used to make chrome-corundum corrosion-resistant bricks for the refractories industry. (Source: Kevin Harber) According to US-based refractory brick supplier, KT Refractories, the service temperature for corundum bricks goes up to 1,800 degreesC. Corundum bricks can be used in nearly all industrial applications involving extremely high temperatures and where increased resistance is needed against aggressive slags and atmospheres. Such properties or features of corundum bricks are necessary in the chemical industry and for the production of carbon black.

A 1906 US Geological Study (USGS) paper, entitled "Corundum and its Occurrence and Distribution in the United States", notes that "ruby and sapphire, the corundum gems, have been known since prehistoric times".
