    W.G. Sebald discovered John Berger’s books in the beginning of the 1980s, before he actually started his literary career. That reading seems decisive in defining certain trends in Sebald’s work. Literary connections between Sebald and Berger are not confined to a common interest for the study of the relationship between image and text. In several works and critical essays, Sebald goes back to many themes developed by John Berger in About Looking, such as in particular the study of Grünewald’s altarpiece in Colmar and the attention paid to animals’ gaze.

    W.G. Sebald découvre les livres de John Berger au début des années 1980, avant qu’il n’ait véritablement commencé sa carrière littéraire. Cette lecture semble déterminante dans la précision de certaines orientations de l’oeuvre de Sebald. Les rapports entre Sebald et Berger ne se limitent pas à un intérêt commun pour les relations entre le texte et l’image, et Sebald reprendra, dans plusieurs de ses oeuvres et de ses essais critiques, des thèmes développés par John Berger dans Au regard du regard, comme en particulier l’étude du retable d’Issenheim et l’attention portée au regard des animaux.
